The honest comparison

"Can't I just use ChatGPT for free?"

You can. Here's what's different when the tool is built specifically for K-12, instead of for everything at once.

ChatGPT (free tier)
TeachTools
Write a 200-word prompt to get a 4th-grade fractions worksheet that's actually printable.
Pick "Worksheet", type "fractions", choose grade 4. One click.
Reformat the output by hand. Fight Markdown. Re-do the math.
Auto-formatted PDF with KaTeX-rendered math and your school header.
Hope OpenAI's defaults aren't quietly using classroom info to improve their models.
Architecturally can't — students never touch the AI. We don't train on your content.
Re-prompt three times to get an ELL-appropriate version.
Built-in ELL, IEP, and grade-level differentiation toggles.
Copy-paste into Google Docs. Realign tables. Re-do the answer key.
One-click Google Docs export. Separate answer key generated for you.
Send your district a link to a general-purpose chatbot and hope they say yes.
Send them our security page. FERPA-aligned, AES-256, no student accounts.

Not anti-ChatGPT — most of us use it too. Just honest about where general-purpose ends and classroom-ready begins.

Tax-deductible receipts — You'll receive a detailed receipt after every payment labeled "Educational Software Subscription" for easy tax filing. TeachKit is educational software used for classroom instruction and curriculum development.

The questions every teacher asks before paying.

No, and the design makes it impossible. Students don't have accounts. There is no place in the product where a student logs in or types into a model. You — the teacher — describe what you need (e.g. "fractions worksheet, 4th grade"), and you receive a finished document. Real student names, IEP details, and grades never leave your classroom because they never enter the product in the first place. That's what we mean by "FERPA-compliant by design" instead of just FERPA-promising.
Most do. Send your administrator or IT a link to teachtools.co/security — it covers FERPA alignment, AES-256 encryption in transit and at rest, no student accounts, no PII collection, and our subprocessor list. If your district needs a signed DPA or has specific questions, email [email protected] and we'll respond within one business day.
No. The worksheets, quizzes, lesson plans, and rubrics you generate are yours. We do not fine-tune models on your prompts or outputs, and our model providers are configured to not retain or train on your data either.
Each new worksheet, quiz, lesson plan, rubric, parent email — anything you click "Generate" on — counts as one. Re-downloading or re-printing something you've already made doesn't count. Editing an existing document doesn't count. The free counter resets on the first of every month.
You keep access until the end of the period you've already paid for, and then your account drops to Free — three new generations a month. Every document you made while on Pro stays in your library forever. You can re-download, re-print, edit, or export them at any time, regardless of plan. No hostage situation.
In most cases yes — TeachTools is educational software used for classroom instruction and curriculum development. After every payment we email an itemized receipt labeled "Educational Software Subscription" with the date, period, and amount, formatted to drop straight into a reimbursement form or your educator-expense deduction.
